Sapporo is a good base for three very different days out. This guide compares Noboribetsu with Lake Toya, Biei with Furano, and Otaru by travel time, tour fare and what you actually see.

Which way to go
Sapporo sits in the middle of a surprising range of day trips, and they point in different directions. To the west lies the harbor town of Otaru, to the south the volcano country around Noboribetsu with Lake Toya, and to the north the hills of Biei with Furano. None of them needs a hotel change, and each one can be done from the same bed. The real question is not whether to go but which direction fits your time and the season.
Distance explains most of the choice. JR Hokkaido lists the Rapid Airport train from Sapporo to Otaru at 35 minutes.1 The limited express to Noboribetsu takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes.2 Toward Furano, the Hokkaido Chuo Bus express Kosoku Furano-go takes 2.5 hours between the two bus terminals, and the Blue Pond is further on.3 The farther you go, the more a coach tour starts to make sense.
Season changes the answer too. The hills are at their best in the green months, with lavender in summer, while the volcano country and the harbor town work in snow as well. So a trip in February points south or west, and a trip in July points north. The guide to day trips by season goes through it month by month, and this page focuses on how the trips compare when you are choosing.

Tour fares are the lowest from-price among the listings compared on this page for each trip.
The tour this site sells covers the volcano country in one 10-hour day from Sapporo, from $47. Its listed stops are Jigokudani, Cape Chikyu, the Shikotsu Toya National Park Silo Observation Deck, Mt. Usu-Shinzan, Showa-shinzan and a closing break in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, and the guide speaks English or Japanese. The rating is 4.30 from 323 reviews, the most of any Noboribetsu listing we compared, though not the highest score.
The highest-rated rival is a Lake Toya and Jigokudani Valley day with a 4.66 rating from 193 reviews, from $54, with guides in Chinese and English. Another rival, the Hell Valley and Lake Toya day trip, runs 10 hours from $45 with a 4.52 rating from 45 reviews. A fourth, covering Noboribetsu, Lake Toya and Mt. Usu, is from $56 and rated 4.24 from 76 reviews.
Do the sums on what the fare covers. The listing for our tour says the price covers transport only, with lunch and every entrance fee paid separately, and that infants aged 0 to 2 travel free without a seat. Jigokudani and the viewpoints are outdoors, so the extras are modest unless you add the optional Mt. Usu ropeway. If you want the bears and the Edo village, plan them yourself using the guide to those parks.
The hills trip is the other famous one, and it is best from late spring to early autumn. The Furano flower and Blue Pond day, from $48, has 122 reviews and a 4.56 rating, and lists the Patchwork Road, the Blue Pond, Shikisai no Oka, a local restaurant and Farm Tomita. The zoo, falls and pond day is 9 hours from $48 with a 4.25 rating from 113 reviews.
A private or small-group van option is from $43, rated 4.76 from 51 reviews, and the Biei Best 5 day runs 10 to 10.5 hours from $60 with a 4.72 rating from 77 reviews. The details of the pond, the light-up and the parking fee are in the Biei guide, so this page keeps to the comparison. In winter the pond is lit in the evening, but the blue surface cannot be seen under snow.8
The farm stops are seasonal. In 2026 Lavender East was open from June 20 to July 20, while Farm Tomita in winter is covered with snow, open from early January to late March.4,9 A July day in the hills and a February day in the hills are therefore two different trips. If the flowers are the reason you are going, check the bloom dates before you choose a day.

Otaru and the coast
Otaru is the one trip that works better without a tour. The train is short, the canal is a short walk downhill from the station, and the food counters are close together.1,10 The canal was first completed in 1923, and the old bank row behind it gives the town its nickname, the Wall Street of the North.11,12 A day by train fits comfortably in an afternoon and an evening.
Coach tours that include Otaru add the coast. The Cape Kamui coast and Otaru day runs 10 hours from $47 with a 4.37 rating from 65 reviews, and the Kamui, canal and Blue Cave day runs 9 hours from $52 with a 4.73 rating from 79 reviews. The highlights day, 10 hours from $56, has 87 reviews at 4.55. These give you a headland, a canal and a park in a single day.
The honest trade is that tours spend much of the day on the road and at the cape, with less time in the town. The full guide to the town covers the canal, the food, the February candle event and the summer festival. Choose a tour if the coastline matters to you, and the train if you would rather have hours in the streets and a long lunch without a bus waiting.

A star rating alone does not settle the question, so look at both numbers in each listing. Our tour has 4.30 from 323 reviews, the Toya and Jigokudani rival has 4.66 from 193, and a small-group Biei van has 4.76 from 51. A high score on a modest number of reviews tells you less than a good score on hundreds, and a middling score is a reason to read the latest comments, not to walk away.
The listing details matter as much as the stars. Some listings give a full refund if the operator cancels for severe weather, as the Biei Best 5 listing does, and all the listings above state free cancellation up to 24 hours before. In Hokkaido weather decides a lot, particularly in winter, so cancellation terms are worth reading before you pay.
Finally, check the language of the guide. Our tour lists English and Japanese, the Toya and Jigokudani rival lists Chinese and English, and the flower tour lists English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. A day with a guide whose English you cannot follow is a long day, so choose the language first and the price second.

Checklist
If you have a single free day, the volcano country gives the most variety, since it combines steam vents, a crater lake and a young volcano in one outing. If you have two, add Otaru as a slow half day by train, because it asks for no planning. If you have three and it is summer, give the hills a full day of their own, with a very early start.
Think about the order, too. A long coach day is easier to enjoy when you are fresh, so put it early in your stay and keep the easy train day for when you are tired. Whatever you choose, keep one day with nothing booked, because a weather change can push a trip back, and a flexible day lets you move without losing a fare.
Whichever trip you choose, book the day you are sure of the forecast, and read the meeting-point details after you pick a date. The guides in this site go deeper on each trip, from the train to Noboribetsu and the Date Jidaimura and bear park tickets to the Biei light-up and the Otaru canal. Use them to turn a general idea into a plan with times and a budget.
