Otaru is a train ride, not an expedition

A Sapporo to Otaru day trip is the easiest of all, because the rails do the work. JR Hokkaido's sample route lists Sapporo to Otaru by Rapid Airport at 35 minutes with a reserved seat, and prices a Sapporo to Otaru and back day at a normal ticket price of 3,600 yen.1 That sample figure is for a day with reserved seats each way.

The Otaru Tourism Association describes the walk from the station in simple terms: leaving JR Otaru Station, you see the ocean in front of you, and the canal is a short walk downhill.5 There is no transfer and no timetable to decode in the town itself, since the main sights are within walking distance of each other. That makes Otaru a good first day trip from Sapporo for anyone who does not want to plan a route.

Because the trip is so easy, the useful decision is less how to go and more how much of the day to give it. A half day covers the canal, a lunch and some shopping. A full day adds a museum, a hill walk and a long dinner. Leave Sapporo by mid-morning and you have room for both without hurrying, and the evening light on the water is an excellent reason to stay for dinner.

The canal and the old bank row

The canal is the town's best-known sight, and its story is worth knowing before you see it. The tourism association says a downhill stroll from Otaru Station leads to the Otaru Canal, first completed in 1923.2 The canal was not dug to carry water inland. It is the waterway left between the shoreline and a land reclamation project in the harbor, which explains why it feels like a quay rather than a river.

The canal almost vanished. A plan to fill it in for a road met a preservationist movement, and in the end half of the canal was filled in for a road while the remaining half became the canal seen today.8 The surviving stretch is lined with old stone warehouses, now restaurants and shops, and it is at its best at the blue hour, when the water holds the reflections of the buildings.

Behind the canal is a block of former banks. At the height of its trade dominance, Otaru's downtown core held branches of many major banks, and the area was often called the Wall Street of the North.9 The former Otaru branch of the Bank of Japan, completed in 1912, is now a museum.7 Walking the bank row takes little time and gives the town its character, even if you never go inside a single building.

Sushi, yakisoba and sweets

Food is a reason to come in its own right. The tourism association says sushi made with ingredients from Otaru's foreshore and nearby waters is the best thing to eat in town.10 Ask for whatever is in season, because the counters near the station and the canal work from the same fish markets, and a small plate of sweet shrimp or scallops makes a better lunch than a large set menu you cannot finish.

There is a humbler local favorite too. More than 50 restaurants in Otaru serve yakisoba with thick sauce, a plain noodle dish that the town treats as everyday food.6 It suits a quick lunch between sights, and it is cheap compared with sushi.

A practical tip is to eat early. Small counters in the old town fill up at midday on weekends and holidays, and a queue out the door eats into a day trip that already has a train home to catch. Book a seat if a place takes bookings, or choose a counter slightly away from the canal where the crowd thins. Carry a little cash, since some small shops do not take cards.

Candles in the snow, a festival in the summer

Otaru is a good winter trip because of one event. Every February the town holds an event with candles in the snow, and in recent years around 500,000 visitors have been recorded each year.3,12 The Tourism Association describes it as one of the representative events of winter in Hokkaido, held with the help of residents, shopping centers, schools and volunteers. It turns the historic cityscape into a field of small lights.

The size of the crowd matters for planning. A town this small cannot swallow half a million visitors without strain, so trains home are full and the first restaurants close their lists early. Go in the early evening, walk the candle routes before the main wave, and keep your return train in mind. The same trip on an ordinary February weekday is a gentler, quieter version of the town.

The summer calendar has its own date. Otaru's summer festival is held on the last Friday, Saturday and Sunday of July.4 The association describes a parade of fishing boats and houseboats in the port and fireworks on the first and last days. If you visit on those days, expect the canal area to be busy and traffic to be slow, and treat a day in the weeks around it as the calmer alternative.

Weather and what to wear in the port town

Otaru's own climate page is blunt about the seasons. Summers are refreshing, with low humidity and little rain, and cherry blossoms flower from late April to early May, around Golden Week.13,14 That makes late spring and summer the easy months for a walking day, with a light jacket for the evening wind off the water. A hat is useful at midday, since the harbor has little shade.

In the cold months the story changes. In November the maximum temperature goes below 10 degrees C and it snows, and from mid-December the snow begins to stay overnight and the cover thickens.11,15 Pavements near the canal ice over, and sneakers with a thin sole are a bad choice. Boots with grip, a hat and gloves turn a cold day into a pleasant one, and a hot drink inside a warehouse cafe is part of the pleasure.

If you are traveling from Sapporo, remember that the weather in the two places is similar but not identical. The coast can be windier than the city, and a sunny morning in Sapporo does not guarantee the same in Otaru. Check the forecast for the town, not just the city, and keep a rain layer in the bag in any month. A day trip is easier when you are comfortable.

When a coach tour makes sense

Most coach tours labeled Otaru combine it with a coastal drive. The Otaru, Cape Kamui and Blue Cave summer special runs 9 hours from $52, rated 4.73 from 79 reviews, and lists Cape Kamui, the Otaru Canal, 4-5 Minatomachi and Shiroi Koibito Park. The Cape Kamui coast and Otaru day tour runs 10 hours from $47, rated 4.37 from 65 reviews, with stops at Cape Kamui, the Shakotan Peninsula, Sakaimachi in Otaru and Shiroikoibito Park.

The Hokkaido highlights day trip is 10 hours from $56, rated 4.55 from 87 reviews, and lists Cape Kamui, the Otaru Canal, Miyako-dori shopping street, the Otaru steam clock and Shiroikoibito Park. The Otaru and Hokkaido Shrine day trip is 10 hours from $60, rated 5.00 from 13 reviews, and lists Hokkaido Jingu, Maruyama Park and Shiroikoibito Park. That last one is a small set of reviews, which is worth remembering.

For a day trip to Otaru from Sapporo, a coach tour gives you a coastal drive and a little time in town, while the train gives you the town itself for hours. If the coast and the cape are what you want, take the tour. If the canal, the food and a slow walk are what you want, take the train and keep the tour money for lunch. The Herring Mansion is closed during the winter season, and the Temiya Cavern carries wall engravings almost 1,600 years old, so check what is open before you plan the details.16,17
